Which Termite Treatment Is Best for Me?
The answer to this question is—it depends. It depends on two primary factors:
- What kind of termites have infested my home?
- What are the conditions conducive to termite infestations in my home?
Termite treatments in North-Florida homes are either treated with liquid termiticides such as Termidor, a termite monitoring and baiting system or tent-fumigation. In some cases, a combination approach is recommended to treat a single species infestation and in other cases, our expert trained termite technicians find more than one species has invaded a home or structure.
Subterranean termites are the most common termite invaders that InnoTech Pest Management, Inc. technicians discover when they perform a free termite inspection of your St. Johns County home. Subterranean termite colonies can range from 60,000 members to 2-million members and forage up to 300 feet or more! They enter Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Palm Coast, Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach homes through cracks as small as 1/16th of an inch! Given that most homes in north Florida are built on slabs and block construction, there are inevitably settlement cracks and breaks in the foundation wall mortar or block construction that serves as opportunistic conduits for termite entry into your home. Couple this with the fact that subterranean termites are attracted to moisture and moisture is readily abundant under slabs and as a function of the higher water table present in the north Florida climate—and the net result is an invitation for termite infestation. If subterranean termites enter your home through settlement cracks in/around the foundation, Termidor is an excellent choice to kill termites and prevent subterranean termite reinfestation for many years following treatment.
The introduction of Termidor over 20 years ago delivered a next-gen non-repellent termiticide that replaced lackluster repellent termiticides that had previously been the standard treatment of the termite control industry for more than 50 years. To better explain the difference between antiquated “repellent” termiticides versus “non-repellent Termidor” visualize a “barrier” around the perimeter of your home. While an outdated repellent termiticide is applied around your home and is designed to create somewhat of a forcefield against invading termites, a major problem exists with this type of application: what if the colony is located directly underneath the slab of your home? Termites recognize the repellency of these pyrethroid termiticides and do not forage through the treated soil. In other words, by applying this repellent around the home has essentially trapped the colony underneath the slab of your home and termites can continue their work (causing damage within the footprint of your home) until the repellent breaks down—many years down the line. Repellent termiticides only offered efficacy of between 40-60% which means that many homes required frequent retreatment, infestations continue for potentially many years and customers as well as industry professionals lost confidence in these options. In 2023, it is our opinion that repellents should be reserved for the “pre-construction market” only.
While Termidor is also a liquid termiticide, it is vastly unique as it is undetectable to termites. So, now take your home—same foundation and same slab construction as described above. But InnoTech Pest termite technicians now apply Termidor—a non-repellent around your home and it is completely undetectable to termites. Now, it doesn’t matter if the colony is located under the slab or outside of the footprint of the home (anywhere within 300 feet of your home) because termites will just continue their normal foraging habits of travelling to-from their colony nest and gathering food to support members of their colony. As subterranean termites travel through Termidor treated soil, they share or transfer Termidor with other colony members and over a 90-day period following Termidor soil application, the colony is eliminated! BASF—the manufacturer of Termidor guarantees the efficacy for no less than 10-years and the efficacy rate is 99%. So, you can have the same confidence that we have that once applied that your home will be protected for many years to come. Even after your termite treatment, we offer an annual retreatment warranty inspection (cost is approximately 10% of complete termite treatment).
Termidor may also be used alone or in combination with an AG (above ground baiting methodology) to control Formosan termites (which also primarily enter structures through the soil). If satellite or arial colonies are suspected or identified—the use of Termidor Foam, Termidor Dry or an above ground bait may be deployed.
There is another termite species that is seen in a number of north Florida homes—drywood termites. While their colonies tend to be much smaller in number and arial in nature, this species is subsequently not in direct contact with soil and may be found in areas such as rooflines, attic spaces and other areas typically not infested by subterranean termites. Because of the small number of colony members, in some cases drywood termites can be treated by removing infested wood or materials or “spot” treated with Termidor products or a combination of these two methods. In significant infestations however, drywood termites infestations may require tent fumigation.
